Rumors of their secret marriage sparked after the couple was spotted loved-up in Sydney, with Anya Taylor-Joy wearing a dazzling engagement ring and a matching diamond ring on the same finger.
Anya and Malcolm are also reportedly planning a larger ceremony with star guests, friends, and family after the actress finishes her part in Furiosa, the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel. Anya, 26, will be starring as Charlize Theron's character's young version in the previous films. She will star opposite Oscar-winning actor Tom Hardy, who is standing in for Mel Gibson's iconic role.
Following her rumored wedding, Anya flew back to Australia to resume filming for the much-anticipated action flick. The couple hasn't spoken publicly about their wedding, however.
Anya Taylor-Joy has been intensely private about her relationship
Given that the Last Night In Soho star has always kept her private light away from the limelight, it is no surprise that her wedding takes place quietly without paparazzi. In fact, the couple only officially confirmed their relationship at the Academy Awards at Vanity Fair Oscars party in late March this year.
According to Cosmopolitan, Anya and Malcolm began dating in early 2021. During a talk with Elle that April, the Queen's Gambit star hinted at her relationship, referring to her partner. While she didn't explicitly confirm Malcolm was her boyfriend, Anya said:
'My partner’s just come back from work, and he’s moving around all of his equipment.'
She told the fashion magazine, reflecting on the difficulty of a long-distance relationship due to her filming schedule:
'Yes, it is [difficult], but it’s also kind of great because when you’re together you’re really valuing the time that you have. Everyday mundane activities are so full of joy. I love going to the petrol station with him and filling up the car and going to get breakfast.'
In May 2021, Anya and Malcolm were spotted making out in New York City before the actress hosted Saturday Night Live. By July 2021, the couple was 'practically living together', as written by The Sun. The couple went Instagram official in October when McRae took to the social media to share an adorable photo of him with Anya.
The two kept quiet about their relationship for the next few months, however. In an interview with British Vogue in March this year, Anya offered a rare comment about her boyfriend, saying:
'I said to my partner the other day that he was my hobby. I see reading as something that I have to do.'
Like his girlfriend, Malcolm McRae has been keeping his relationship under the radar. Speaking on their preference to keep things under wraps, Anya said:
'He loved it because he's the same. I've finally found someone who will happily sit in silence with me reading. We're basically 80 years old and seven at the same time and it works really well.'
Who is Malcolm McRae?
Malcolm McRae is a musician who's playing guitar and piano in the duo band More, in which he features alongside bandmate Kane Ritchotte. Interestingly, he shares the same birthday with Anya Taylor-Joy, both born on April 16.
In an interview with Pass The Crown, Malcolm shared that he grew up in a suburb outside Birmingham, Alabama. However, he decided to move to Los Angeles with his ex-girlfriend, and it was in LA that he struck up a music duo with Kane Ritchotte.
Aside from his musical career, the Alabama native is also an actor, although his screen appearances have been few and far between. His most recent acting credit is in a short film called How’dy in 2020.
