Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made claims about racism within the royal family during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are famously known for their dedicated activities, fighting against many social prejudices from sexism to racism. Meghan, who hails from a non-royal background, is producing her popular Archetypes podcast series, in which she regularly talks about social justice and how to overcome them. And that's just one of the many ways that the Sussexes show their dedication to making life better.
And thanks to their efforts, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be awarded a prestigious title at the Ripple of Hope Gala in New York for standing up to ‘structural racism’ in the Royal Family.
What is the award given to Harry and Meghan?
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been recognized with a prestigious human rights prize. According to El Confidencial, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle won the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights Award for their effort going against racial injustice inside the royal institution. On December 6 2022, the royal couple were bestowed with the Ripple of Hope award.
During a previous interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle once made accusations concerning racism within the Royal Family. The couple also explained why they decided to stand down from their royal duties, which they announced in January 2020.
According to the Insider, in the startling interview with Winfrey, the couple claimed the British Royal Family worried over their son Archie's skin tone before his birth. In fact, Meghan is African American and the family's first person of color to be a member of the Royals.
After the interview, Prince William was forced to support the monarchy, assuring reporters that 'we are very much not a racist family.'
Following the interview, Buckingham Palace also released a statement on the monarch's behalf:
'While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.'
Harry and Meghan praised for 'courageous stance'
Kenny Kennedy, a human rights activist, explained why they are honoring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in an interview with the Spanish daily El Confidencial. He claimed the couple made a courageous stand against the royals even though they would inevitably confront the family.
Kenny Kennedy praised Harry and Meghan's courage to 'tell the Royals what they were doing wrong':
‘They went to the oldest institution in UK history and told them what they were doing wrong, that they couldn't have structural racism within the institution; that they could not maintain a misunderstanding about mental health.'
‘They knew that if they did this there would be consequences, that they would be ostracized, they would lose their family, their position within this structure, and that people would blame them for it,’ he continued. ‘They have done it anyway because they believed they couldn't live with themselves if they didn't question this authority.’
According to the Mirror, the Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Awards is a precious prize to recognize outstanding leaders in government, business, activism, and entertainment who have displayed an unshakable commitment to social reform and worked to safeguard and enhance equality, justice, and human rights over the years.
Other honorees at the award banquet in New York City include Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky and NBA legend Bill Russell, who will receive a posthumous award for his work on human liberties throughout his life.
