Liverpool is one of the greatest football clubs in the English Premier League's history with many trophies and achievements. Over the years, the club has also introduced some of the very best captains in football history.
Under the captaincy of England international Jordan Henderson, Liverpool has achieved tremendous success in recent years, most notably winning a UCL Champions League title and an English Premier League title. Behind the club's success is Henderson's unrelenting contribution, both on and off the pitch.
Before Jordan Henderson, Liverpool had a wide range of accomplished and well-known captains who made significant contributions.
Jamie Redknapp
One of them includes Jamie Redknapp, who was born on June 25, 1973. From 1991 to 2002, the former England international played for Liverpool, making 237 appearances and scoring 30 goals.
At the age of 17, Redknapp agreed to a £350,000 transfer from Bournemouth to Liverpool on January 15, 1991. He made his UEFA Cup second-round debut against Auxerre on October 23, 1991, when he entered the game in the 79th minute of the first leg.
On December 7, 1991, he scored his first goal for Liverpool against Southampton. Redknapp joined Tottenham Hotspur on April 18, 2002, after serving 11 years at Anfield. The League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and other trophies are among his many victories.
Sami Hyypia
Sami Hyypia, Redknapp's descendant, was born on October 7, 1973. He is a former defender and current football manager in Finland. In a £2.6 million transfer in 1999, he joined Liverpool, the team he has rooted for since he was a young fan.
By 2001, he was the team's regular captain, and that year Liverpool won a spate of awards, including the UEFA Super Cup, FA Community Shield, and the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup, for the first time. He was a member of the 2003 Football League Cup-winning side and took over as the team's primary captain in the 2001–2002 season.
Hyypia became a fan favorite throughout his 10 years in Merseyside and is still well-liked by the team's supporters. Hyypiä represented Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga from 2009 to 2011, before he announced his retirement from the sports.
Robbie Fowler
Robbie Fowler was another legendary captain of the Reds. Following his graduation from the academy, Fowler had two stints at Liverpool, the first from 1993 until 2001 and the second for the 2006–07 season. One of Liverpool's top goal scorers, Fowler scored 183 goals in 357 games across all competitions.
He received 26 England caps and scored 7 goals. Fowler was a member of the England teams that competed in the 1996, 2000, and 2002 World Cups. Among his many achievements are two PFA Young Player of the Year awards, two Premier League Player of the Month awards, and more.
Steven Gerrard
Last but not least is Steven Gerrard, the club's undisputed greatest captain. In the early 2000s, he was regarded as one of the world's most complete football players and best midfielders England ever boasted, alongside Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. Gerrard played central midfield for Liverpool and the England team for the entirety of his playing career, serving as both teams' captains.
At age 17, he entered into a professional deal with Liverpool and made his debut in 1998. He won the 2005–06 FA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the League Cup, and other trophies for the club in addition to his spectacular goals, earning him England's Young Player of the Year award, the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award, among other accolades. Shortly after the World Cup was over, Gerrard announced his retirement from international competition. Gerrard continued to manage Rangers after concluding his playing career, first serving as the youth coach for Liverpool in 2017.
He's now enjoying his second season at Aston Villa, which he has made a difficult mid-tier team to deal with.
