Early success

At the age of 16, Applegate made her first appearance on television through the Fox series Married... with Children in 1987, which was the first primetime show by the network, reports Yahoo! Movies. This initiated her 35-year career in acting.

Her humorous portrayal of the character Kelly Bundy is considered to be iconic, and she noted that the show helped her explore comedic avenues in film and television, reports LA Times.

She said:

I was a dark kid,” Applegate reflects. “I always thought serious projects were going to be my jam. But the show really helped me to let go of being so serious all the time.

The show lasted for 11 seasons and it is the longest sitcom to have aired on Fox, and the show is considered to be iconic as well.

A daunting diagnosis

Following the success of Married... with Children, she went on to star in numerous shows such as Jesse, Samantha Who? and most recently Dead to Me, and in terms of movies she has most notably starred in Bad Moms and Anchorman. She was also nominated for the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity in 2005.

However, in 2008 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, reports People Magazine. She noted that the cancer was not life threatening, further adding that she is expecting to make a full recovery.

Later, it was revealed that the actress went through a double mastectomy and was declared cancer-free. That being said, it was found that she had a genetic trait that increases the chances of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Reflecting on her diagnosis, the actress said:

I was just shaking and then, also immediately, I had to go into 'take-care-of-business mode,' which included a change to a more healthy diet.

Further TV success and medical complications

The actress once again found success in television through the Netflix black comedy series Dead to Me, with all three seasons receiving critical acclaim. The series ran from 2019 till 2022.

However, in 2021 the actress revealed that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She recently opened up about the difficulties that she had been facing particularly with the shoot of the third season of Dead to Me. The production subsequently shut down as she began her treatment, reports CNN.

She said:

There was the sense of, ‘Well, let’s get her some medicine so she can get better,' and there is no better. But it was good for me. I needed to process my loss of my life, my loss of that part of me. So I needed that time.

She further noted that the signs were there as early as 2019 during the beginning of Dead to Me production, and she experienced mobility and balance issues. She wished that she had paid attention, but also noted 'But who was I to know?'

Netflix was set on shutting down production entirely in the wake of her health issues, but Applegate was convinced that she 'had an obligation' to the creators of the show, and spent a grueling period of time while shooting the third season, reports Variety.

Last week, she made her first public appearance as she attended the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on receiving her star. She particularly noted that this would be the first time fans would be seeing her as a disabled person, and that it is a difficult experience.

Taking to the podium, the actress said:

The most important person in this world is my daughter. You are so much more than even you know. You are so beautiful and kind and smart and interesting. I’m blessed every day that I get to wake up and take you to school…thank you for standing by me through all of this.

Speaking to Variety, she added:

I got diagnosed while we were working, I had to call everybody and be like, ‘I have multiple sclerosis guys. Like, what the f****!’ And then it was about kind of learning — all of us learning — what I was going to be capable of doing.
