One of the famous couples in Hollywood had an equally famous split, but what are the reasons that lead up to that moment?
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were a powerhouse of a couple with both actors being one of the leading and most attractive actors in Hollywood. The celebrities officially tied the knot in 2014. The ceremony was held in the chapel of Château Miraval, which was the family's estate in the French village of Correns, reports People Magazine.
Despite the dreamy match-up, the couple went through quite a few bumps on the road which eventually lead to their abrupt split in 2016, to the extended surprise of many fans.

The public's perception of the couple's union couldn't have been more positive at the time of their marriage. The perceived strength of their relationship was reflected in the nickname 'Brangelina', which according to The Atlantic, was first coined by People Magazine.
That being said, fans and publications realized that there was trouble in paradise only after the couple had filed for divorce due to Pitt reportedly losing composure and getting into a drunken altercation with their son Maddox on a flight, based on a report from Metro.
The couple subsequently announced that they would be dealing with the divorce privately, which further lead publications and fans to veer towards speculations. According to Evening Standard, it was only in 2017 when Jolie made a comment on the situation stating that 'we will get through this time and hopefully be a stronger family for it.'
A joke that may be considered insensitive
The Sun reported that during the 2020 SAG awards when Pitt won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood, he made a joke saying 'this role was a bit of a stretch. Guy who gets high, takes his shirt off, doesn’t get along with his wife'
A source close to Jolie spoke to The Sun stating that she would feel disrespected by Pitt publicly making a joke about their marriage which she essentially considers to be a private matter. Furthermore, the source noted that Jolie would never do the same.
In addition to a sense of animosity between the actors, these instances of presumed friction give way to speculations about relationship troubles that may have existed for years.
Pitt's relationship with Jennifer Aniston
The joke that Pitt made during the SAG Awards drew in laughs from the audience, which included his ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston. Shortly after the Awards, Pitt and Aniston met with each other which sent fans and publications into a frenzy.
The relationship and marriage between Pitt and Aniston was another high-profile union that was rife with strong emotions between the two actors. According to Shape Magazine, Aniston went into therapy following the split, which clearly establishes the intensity of the relationship.
This intensity could have contributed to friction between Pitt and Jolie, where the actress may have felt Aniston's presence throughout her relationship with Pitt, particularly due to the public fervor toward Pitt and Aniston's relationship.

Six years after their announcement of divorce, the flames have not been quelled as Jolie's former company, Nouvel LLC, sued Pitt with claims of the actor stealing her wine business, reports The Daily Mail. Pitt filed a cross-complaint claiming that the actress illegally sold her stake in their previously jointly-owned family estate.
The direction of who will benefit in this situation is difficult to determine, but the one thing that can be determined throughout this entire exchange is that it clearly indicates that the legal tussle between the actors could turn out to be very nasty similar to the highly publicized court proceedings between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
