The relationship between Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik dominated the headlines at one point, and even though there were moments of difficulties, the couple maintained one of the longest relationships in Hollywood, and news publications were frequently behind them.
However, in October 2021, People reported that the couple had broken up under difficult circumstances. With that in mind, where does their relationship stand now?
A casual beginning
According to Insider, a few months after his exit from One Direction, Malik broke up with his fiancée Perrie Edwards in August 2015. On the other end, Hadid and Joe Jonas broke up in November of the same year due to their hectic schedules.
That same month, Malik and Hadid were pictured together after attending the American Music Awards, with sources stating that they were casually dating. A few months later, they posted a picture of a polaroid with both of them on Instagram, officializing their relationship.
Following that, the couple have been frequently pictured together and they've consistently supported each other's careers as well. Insider further reports how Hadid was pictured wearing Malik's merchandise, and the couple appeared in Malik's music video for Pillowtalk as well.
A string of splits to breakup
2016 was the year when reports came in that the couple had split, and Insider reports that the couple were working on communicating better with each other as well as striving to be truthful to each other. A few months later, People reported that the couple got back together.
Two years later, the couple officially announced that they broke up once again, and this time the reason cited was tight work schedules.
Hadid tweeted:
I'm forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever's meant to be will always be.
Malik also made a statement:
Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend. She has such an incredible soul. I'm grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all.
A month later the couple were pictured kissing by TMZ, and a few months after that Hadid confirmed that they had gotten back together. A few more breakups followed, and in April Hadid officially announced that she was pregnant on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The couple welcomed their daughter, Khai, in September of that year.
2021 marked the year when the couple had a definitive breakup following reports of Mailk allegedly striking Hadid's mother, Yolanda Hadid, an allegation that Malik has vehemently denied.
At the time, Malik stated that he intends to create 'a place where private family matters aren't thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart,' further noting that this particular incident 'was and still should be a private matter.'
Where do they stand now?
Hola! reports that currently, the couple are in a much better place, with both of them committed to co-parenting Khai, their 2-year-old daughter. Since the breakup, Gigi has reportedly remained single, but there are rumors that she is dating Leonardo DiCaprio.
Further reports state that the rumors of the model dating the Oscar-winning actor has riled up Malik, who is reportedly hoping to get back together with Hadid. That being said, it is clear that the couple intend to be there for their daughter, thus that is what they are clearly aiming to maintain.
