After being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, Bruce has been having a hard time with speech and other symptoms that hamper his day-to-day functioning. And it has not been easy for anyone, especially his family, who has to see him suffer.'

Recently, his wife, Emma Heming Willis, opened up about her journey as a caregiver to someone fighting a chronic illness, particularly frontotemporal dementia. Here’s everything you need to know about Emma Heming and what she said about Bruce’s current condition.

Emma Heming’s current update about Bruce

In an exclusive interview with TODAY co-anchor Hoda Kotb, Emma opened up about the unspoken struggles of being a primary caregiver to someone battling dementia. Effectively kicking off the World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week, Emma Willis said the following about how the illness affects families as a whole.

“Dementia is hard. It’s hard on the person diagnosed, it’s also hard on the family. And that is no different for Bruce, or myself, or our girls. When they say this is a family disease, it really is."

She also said that she isn’t really sure if her husband, Bruce Willis, is aware of his condition, which is even sadder.

Emma Heming, the care partner

Emma Heming prefers to call herself a care partner over a caretaker or caregiver, given that most illnesses are tackled as a team. She’s also a strong believer that care partners need to look after themselves first and foremost, to be able to provide that level of care to the patient. Emma has always been vocal about the importance of mental and physical health for a care partner. As per TODAY, she said the following about Bruce Willis, and how he adds value to their (her and her daughters) lives even today, despite his sad condition.

“He is the gift that keeps on giving”

She also said that he's taught their two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, traits like love, patience, and resilience, amidst all the health struggles the family is undergoing. She said:

"It's teaching them so much and how to care and love, and it’s really a beautiful thing amongst the sadness."

Although currently, Emma has adopted the role of a care partner, she is so much more than that. Here’s a look at Emma Heming’s life before she became a care partner.
