Oscar-winning Italian actress Sophia Loren, an enduring icon of the silver screen, has found herself in the hospital after a recent accident in her Geneva, Switzerland home.

What happened to Sophia Loren?

Loren, 89, reportedly suffered fractures to her hip and thigh bone during the fall. Her agent, Andrea Giusti, shared the update with CNN and assured fans that the surgery had gone smoothly. Giusti told Reuters, 'The surgery went very well. Now, we just have to wait.'

As per Reuters, Italian public broadcaster RAI had initially reported that Loren was planning to open the new branch of the Sophia Loren restaurant chain in Bari, Italy, but her recent fall has understandably disrupted these plans.

While details of the accident were not disclosed, Italian media reports confirm the incident occurred at her Geneva residence, resulting in a broken hip. Loren’s sons Carlo Jr., 54, and Edoardo, 50 - who she shared with late movie producer husband Carlo Pont, have been by their mother’s side at the hospital.

News of Loren's fall and hospitalization initially surfaced on the Facebook page of Sophia Loren Restaurant. The post, written in Italian, translates:

'A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms Loren hip fractures. Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation. Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon. The whole team at Sophia Loren Restaurant takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery. #sophialoren @sophialorenrestaurant.'
