The comedy star said goodbye to Bake Off in December 2022

The comedy star, who said goodbye to Bake Off in December after three years, has undergone a dramatic transformation and there's a heartbreaking reason behind it.

Matt Lucas, the beloved actor, comedian, and co-host of The Great British Bake Off, has surprised fans with his remarkable weight loss transformation in recent years. However, many may not be aware of the deeply personal reason behind his decision to embark on this journey.

Health concerns run in the family

During a 2022 episode of Gabby Logan's Mid.Point podcast, Matt candidly opened up about the health concerns that prompted his weight loss journey. He revealed that his family's medical history was a significant factor, as both his father and grandfather had passed away at relatively young ages. Matt lost his father when he was just 22 years old, and this loss had a profound impact on him. He explained, 'I'm 48, my dad died when he was 52, very suddenly, his dad died, I think at 56, so I was looking at the law of averages here.'

This realization was a wake-up call for Matt, who was grappling with weight gain during the pandemic, attributing it to a sedentary lifestyle and indulgent eating habits. He humorously admitted, 'I can't tell you how many roast potatoes I ate!'

Matt's weight had reached a point where it affected his work in the entertainment industry. He remarked, 'I was so big I couldn't really fit on screen anymore.'

Notably, this wasn't the first time Matt Lucas embarked on a weight loss journey due to health concerns. In 2009, at the age of 35, he revealed that he had lost a significant amount of weight in just two months after his doctor warned him of the risk of developing 'self-inflicted diabetes'.

Matt's way to deal with it

As per The Mirror, Matt Lucas didn't resort to extreme diets or deprivation to achieve his weight loss goals. He emphasized that he still enjoyed sweets while making an effort to eat less overall.

As per Hello!, he incorporated regular walks into his routine, taking advantage of the picturesque canal near his home. He shared, 'I live not far from a canal and I love when the weather's nice, going for long walks by the canal, either with a friend or on my own.'

He added:

'The one thing I need to do is get fitter, I have put on a little bit of weight, that's my next challenge to do a bit more exercise. I might have to make a game of it when I go out and exercise to stay out of people's way. I don't have a garden so I have to find a way to do that.'

Despite his successful journey towards a healthier lifestyle, Matt Lucas encountered an unexpected challenge - 'thin shaming.' In April 2022, the former Little Britain and Doctor Who star took to Twitter to share an incident at a football match where a woman stopped him to comment on his weight loss, saying he looked older. The star wrote:

'Shout out to the lady who stopped me at football today to ask me why I've lost weight and to inform me I look a lot older. For the first time in my life, I think I've just been thin-shamed!'

What is Matt Lucas doing now?

In December 2022, Matt Lucas bid farewell to The Great British Bake Off after three series and 51 episodes as a co-host. He explained his decision, citing a heavy workload and the desire to focus on other projects. However, he later revealed to The Mirror that his good friend and frequent collaborator, David Walliams, played a significant role in his decision. The two decided to work together again on new creative endeavors.

Outside of TV, Matt is also due to releasing his debut novel, The Boy Who Slept Through Christmas on September 28
