The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will soon release a Netflix docuseries that contains untold truths about the Royal Family.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the popular royal couple, are slated to star in a Netflix docuseries. Liz Garbus, an Oscar-winning filmmaker, will direct the docuseries. Love, Marilyn, What Happened, Miss Simone?, and Bobby Fischer Against the World are among the documentaries created by the director.
According to Page Six, the exact release date for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's upcoming Netflix documentary has been disclosed.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle inked a multi-million dollar contract with Netflix in September 2020, after resigning as working members of the royal family. The collaboration will encompass documentaries, docuseries, feature films, scripted shows, and children's programming, in collaboration with the royal couple's production firm, Archewell Productions.
The docuseries about Harry and Meghan Markle is the most anticipated project from the multi-year Netflix contract. However, specifics regarding the event have been kept under wraps.
When will it be released?
It was announced in November 2022 that the untitled docuseries would be launched on Netflix in December 2022. However, following the criticism over The Crown season five, Netflix officially delayed releasing date until 2023.
Both royal experts and fans have hypothesized that the Netflix series may portray the royal family in a more unfavorable light. In contrast, some publications claim that Harry and Meghan wanted to lighten the royal family's image following Queen Elizabeth II's death.
An insider told Deadline:
‘They’re rattled at Netflix and they blinked first and decided to postpone the documentary.’
What is the story of the series?
The Duchess of Sussex hinted last August in an interview with The Cut that the docuseries would focus on her ‘love story’ with Prince Harry. She denied allegations that the two were filming a reality show, but stressed that there is a distinction between a ‘history documentary and a reality docuseries.’
‘The piece of my life I haven’t been able to share, that people haven’t been able to see, is our love story’ she stated, before quoting a line from a speech she gave during her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018. – ‘resounding knowledge that, above all, love wins’.
Meghan confessed:
‘I hope that is the sentiment that people feel when they see any of the content or the projects that we are working on.'
The docuseries is expected to begin production in September 2021. Last October, the couple was spotted in New York City with a filmmaker and photographer, sparking speculation that they were shooting their work.
Harry's portrayal of the Royal Family
According to Page Six, Harry and Meghan wished to soften their docuseries' image of the Royal Family, notably King Charles II, the Queen Consort, and the Prince and Princess of Wales. One source said:
‘A lot of conversations are happening. I hear that Harry and Meghan want the series to be held until next year, they want to stall. I wonder if the show could even be dead in the water at this point, do Harry and Meghan just want to shelve this thing?’
A Netflix source told how it's really pressuring for Netflix CEO to finish the show given his relationship with the Sussexes:
‘Netflix has been keen to have the show ready to stream for December. There’s a lot of pressure on [Netflix CEO] Ted Sarandos, who has the relationship with Harry and Meghan, to get this show finished.’
The two apparently decided to edit the documentary after spending time with the royal family in the UK following Queen Elizabeth II's death.
