Kate Garraway previously took a leave from her signature Good Morning Britain routine following her husband's deteriorating health conditions.

According to ManchesterEveningNews, the 55-year-old presenter gave a health update on her husband Derek Draper as she appeared on Thursday's installment of Good Morning Britain. Joining new presenter Paul Brand, Kate touched on her husband's health as she spoke to rail union boss Mick Lynch about the recent rail strikes that are taking a toll on the national train network. This is her second update on Derek's health after she elaborated on his conditions for the first time in early August.

She said: 'I spend pretty much all of my time on trains, or in hospital with Derek.'

Derek's ongoing battle with Covid-19

Derek, a former political adviser, was hospitalized at Accident & Emergency (A&E) in July after he went down with severe sepsis - the accumulative result of his ongoing battle with Covid-19. Back in 2020, the 55-year-old lobbyist contracted the virus for the first time and suffered from serious deterioration in his kidneys, requiring intensive daily care. According to the Mirror, Derek is now the worst affected living Covid patient in the UK, having battled the virus since early 2020 when the pandemic broke out.

Kate, who has been fronting GMB every Thursday and Friday since 2014, had to take a three-week hiatus from her ITV daytime show at the time to look after her husband. Fans were initially worried about her sudden absence from screens but later learned of Derek's condition from Kate's co-hosts.

He remains in hospital without intensive care

On August 2, the Life Stories presenter returned to her hosting seat where she was joined by Richard Madeley. Two days before that, the star told her fans that her departure was because Derek's health 'took an unexpected and frightening turn for the worse'. She wrote on Instagram:

'Derek's health took an unexpected and frightening turn for the worse that landed him back in intensive care and fighting for his life - again.'

She added that Derek's kidneys were 'really badly infected':

'Unfortunately, his kidneys were really badly infected, blocked. The challenge now is to save them, so that’s where we’ve been for the last three weeks. He’s still in hospital, not in intensive care, waiting for another procedure, looking really good. So fingers crossed on everything and particularly one kidney looking really good, just need to look at the other one, and so yeah, he’s still in (a) high dependency (unit).'

Kate later assured concerned viewers that her husband is now 'back on the right side of it', implying that he does not need intensive care anymore despite remaining in hospital. She said:

'The sepsis is under control. One kidney is looking really good, just need to look at the other one. We’re back on the right side of it now.'

She also expressed her gratitude for 'all fans' messages of support', writing:

'Thank you so so much for all your messages of support - they really do mean the world to me & the whole family.'

The mum of two added:

'Thanks to the amazing NHS teams & his own extraordinary life force & spirit Derek - please god - is back on the right side of it now and I'm so looking forward to seeing you all back on @gmb.'

Kate walked down the aisle with Derek in 2015 and has since welcomed two children, 16-year-old Darcey and 13-year-old Billy.
