Ella Toone and her boyfriend are very much in love, but are called an 'unlikely pairing', here's why that is.

Manchester United has created some big names in football. And we’re not talking exclusively about men's football. From stars they could not keep like Alessia Russo, to stars that stayed with United for the long run, United has invested heavily in women’s football. And one of those star players is Ella Toone.

With the Women’s FIFA World Cup just wrapped up, Ella Toone represented the national team of England, fondly known as the Lionesses, coached by Sarina Wiegman. Being one of the finest attacking midfielders among women, Ella has earned a name for herself in the football world. And it looks like she is into football more than you think, given that her partner is also a footballer. Here’s everything you need to know about Ella Toone’s footballer boyfriend.

Ella Toone’s boyfriend

23-year-old Ella Toone is quite open with the public about her love life. The Manchester United star is dating a footballer who is quite famous in his league. The Lionesses star is dating Joe Bunney (who is 29) and is said to have met him through some mutual friends. While Ella plays for the big leagues, Joe is a more small-league player. He presently plays for Stalybridge Celtic, a team based out of Greater Manchester, which he signed on earlier this year.

But despite being a great couple together, there is a reason why the couple is known as an ‘unlikely pairing. Here’s why that is.

The ‘unlikely pairing’

The couple seem very much in love and in awe of each other. In fact, Joe Bunney is said to be Ella Toone’s biggest cheerleader. But the reason why the couple are called an unlikely pairing is because of the teams that they represent. Because of playing with Stalybridge Celtic, Joe is representing Manchester City. Given that Ella represents Manchester United, the couple represents two ends of the Manchester derbies by being a part of rival teams.

But despite representing rival teams, the couple's love life is unaffected by it. Their teams are forgotten when it comes to their romance. In fact, the two of them only talk highly about each other, which their fans find extremely sweet.

The relationship

A source spoke to The Sun about the relationship between the two footballers hailing from rival clubs and said the following.

"Ella and Joe are very much in love and have been together for a while now."
"They are both from Manchester and have mutual friends who introduced them."
"Those who know them think they are the perfect pairing."
"Joe is Ella’s biggest cheerleader and he could not have been more proud to watch her lifting the trophy at the Euros."

Besides a random social media post here and there, and some lovey-dovey comments on each other's posts, the couple remains tight-lipped about their romance. Despite choosing to remain private, they are often snapped together by the paps, confirming their love for one another. As per The Metro, Ella has even revealed that she consults with her father and boyfriend about her performance on the football field, she said the following to The Times.

“I always speak to my dad and then Joe. How can I be better? What did I not do well? I know they will always be honest with me.”
“When Dad or Joe says I have played well, I know I have. I am very critical of myself and sometimes I need to realise that I haven’t played as badly as I thought.”
“I’ve seen the career [Joe] has had and his advice is definitely worth listening to. I will always be improving, that’s just my mentality. He makes me see things in a different way.”
