Humble beginnings

Lord Alan Michael Sugar was born on March 24, 1947, in Hackney, London. He was raised in a working-class family and attended the Brooke House Secondary Modern School in Upper Clapton.

Sugar's entrepreneurial spirit was evident at a young age when he started selling car aerials and other electrical goods from the back of a van. He later left school at the age of 16 to work for a company that sold electrical goods and quickly rose through the ranks to become a salesperson.

In 1968, Sugar founded his own company called Amstrad, which initially sold consumer electronics such as hi-fi turntables and amplifiers. However, it was not until the introduction of the personal computer that Amstrad really took off.

The company was known for producing affordable, mass-market computers that were popular in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s. This success led Sugar to become one of the richest men in the UK and cemented his reputation as a shrewd businessman.

New venture

The Apprentice is a reality television series that first aired in the UK in 2005. The show was based on the original American version, which was created by Mark Burnett. In the UK version, Lord Alan Michael Sugar was selected as the host and main advisor.

The premise of the show was to find a new business partner for Sugar. Contestants would compete in various challenges, showcasing their business acumen and entrepreneurial skills. Each week, Sugar would eliminate one or more candidates, often with his trademark catchphrase 'You're fired!'

The show quickly became popular due to its mix of drama, humor, and suspense. It also showcased Sugar's no-nonsense approach to business and his ability to spot talent. Over the years, the show has launched the careers of many successful entrepreneurs, and Sugar himself has become a household name.

The future of The Apprentice

Lord Sugar recently celebrated his 76th birthday. In an interview, he revealed his plans for the future of the popular reality show, The Apprentice, which he has hosted since its inception in 2005. Lord Sugar explained that he does not plan to continue hosting the show forever and that he has a clear idea of what he wants to happen once he leaves.

He stated that the show should not air for at least ten years after his exit, as he believes that the show needs time to settle down and to find a new host who is capable of carrying on the legacy he has built.

He said:

If it was up to me, I think it should be, ‘Thank you very much, it’s been great, but maybe in ten years’ time we’ll bring it back’. like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, but with different characters hosting.
