In his documentary, Robbie's director, Joe Pearlman, aimed to create a unique portrayal of the pop star's life. The project showcases thousands of hours of archived footage, providing viewers with a comprehensive look into the highs and lows of Robbie Williams' career. It also explores the impact of fame on his mental health and personal life.
Speaking to The Mirror, Pearlman emphasized the price of fame and the challenges that come with it. He mentioned how Robbie Williams, like many other celebrities, receives accolades, wealth, and success while simultaneously enduring public scrutiny, abuse, and a sense of being owned by others.
Robbie Williams and Geri Halliwell's past romance
In an intimate and candid revelation, pop star Robbie Williams recently shared the tumultuous details of his past relationship with Spice Girl Geri Halliwell in his upcoming four-part Netflix documentary.
Robbie Williams, now 49, embarked on a romantic relationship with Geri Halliwell, popularly known as Ginger Spice, in 2000. Their connection blossomed while Robbie was seeking help from Alcoholics Anonymous for his addiction issues, marking a significant period of personal growth for both artists.
In the documentary, Robbie describes their relationship as more than just a fling, stating that it felt 'magical.' According to The Independent, the couple spent an extended vacation in the picturesque south of France, accompanied by Robbie's songwriting partner, Guy Chambers, and his wife Emma.
'We got on really well, it was fun, and we were just a little gang that were sharing a very magical moment, in a magical place.'
Why did the pair break up?
However, the relationship took a confusing turn when Robbie became convinced that Geri was tipping off the paparazzi about their whereabouts. He claims that a paparazzo falsely informed him that Geri was responsible for the relentless pursuit by photographers.
'It was a very confusing relationship because she's a girl and I'm a boy, we are very good friends trying to sort out the wreckage of the past. I just found her company very, very easy… There [was] a silliness.'
Although the Angels star no longer believes the claim that Geri informed the paparazzi, at the time, he was deeply affected by the paranoia that fame can breed.
He added:
'I bumped into a guy who’s a paparazzi and he told me it was Geri doing it. Now I don’t think that’s true for one second but at the time I did believe it. It just goes to show what being in the spotlight can do to your psyche when you can’t trust anybody and it ruined in some way the memory of such an important part of my life and such a joyous occasion.'
In the documentary, Robbie' personal footage reveals that Geri Halliwell served as the inspiration for his hit single Eternity. This song, released in 2001, became a chart-topping success and symbolized their unique connection.
Notably, Geri Halliwell struggled with an eating disorder during her time as Ginger Spice, which she kept hidden from her fellow Spice Girls. Robbie, who had his own battles with addiction and rehab, encouraged her to seek professional help, which she believes saved her life.
