The actor's portfolio

Following his entry into the television medium and a few minor roles here and there, the actor found fame through the BBC spy drama series Spooks, reports The Guardian. The actor played Tom Quinn, the chief of Section D, a counter-terrorism division in the show.

The actor then appeared in the film In My Father's Den for which he got nominated for best actor at the British Independent Film Awards. Following that, his role in Pride and Prejudice as Mr. Darcy, although not entirely accepted by the fans of the original British TV series whose character was portrayed by Colin Firth, found success amongst the younger audience.

Macfadyen's second break came through the series Succession which began airing in 2018. His portrayal of the slimy yet vulnerable character of Tom Wambsgans earned him critical and audience acclaim, reports Vanity Fair.

He then returned to British television through his portrayal of the controversial figure Major Charles Ingram on the show Quiz on ITV. The show chronicles the Ingram's journey of fraudulently winning Who Wants to Be a Millionaire that's portrayed in a tragic yet comedic and sensible way by Macfadyen.

His personal life

Macfadyen is reportedly private when it comes to his life behind the screens. As opposed to the volatile character he portrays in Succession, he's a calm and cheery individual in person whose talent has been under the radar for the majority of his career, reports Vanity Fair.

David Oyelowo, his friend and co-star from Spooks recalls saying that 'the reality is that you are an indisputable leading man, and you keep hiding in the corner.'
