The world lost a talented musician recently, that too someone who has touched the lives of children (and adults) alike. Coco Lee, who is a Hong Kong-born musician, was one of the most popular musicians and the first ever Chinese American musician to perform at the Academy Awards.
But, her life was short-lived as the musician died at 48 years of age, earlier this month. Coco has contributed to so many iconic movies, such as Mulan and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, with her amazing vocals. Here’s everything you need to know about Coco Lee’s death, her husband, and her family.
The sad demise of Coco Lee
Coco Lee attempted suicide at her home and was admitted to the hospital for three days before she lost her life. The singer-songwriter was suffering from depression and lost the battle to it in the most tragic way. And this is what her sisters (Carol and Nancy) said about her sad demise in a statement on social media:
“With great sadness, we are here (to) break the most devastating news: Coco had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months. Although CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her.”
Coco has been undergoing a series of health issues from depression to breast cancer in the past year, as per People. She was also estranged from and living separately from her husband Bruce, as per multiple sources. There were also rumors of an impending divorce in the pipeline before the singer took her own life.
Who was Coco Lee’s husband?
Coco Lee was married to Canadian billionaire businessman Bruce Rockowitz. He is the CEO of the supply chain company Li&Fung. The couple was rumored to be separated for the last two years, but there was no confirmation of this news. Although Bruce was out of town during the time of her attempted suicide, he flew back soon after he heard the news.
As per Metro, Bruce, along with his daughters from his previous marriage, shared a tribute about Coco Lee, which said:
“Coco was a beautiful person inside and out, warm and kind. She was an accomplished singer-songwriter, a talented performer, a caring mentor to the younger generation, a beloved wife, a well-loved friend, and a dear family member. She brought light to everyone around her with her enthusiasm, devotion, and sincere personality. Every life she touched will deeply miss her. Her influence will always be shining. Details of her funeral will be announced at a later time."
Coco and Bruce got married in 2011 with a lavish and extravagant wedding, which featured big names like Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys, and Ne-Yo. Needless to say, this big wedding made global headlines.
Coco Lee’s family life
Coco Lee seemed very close to her mother and her elder sisters (Carol and Nancy). She did not have any children of her own, with her husband Bruce.
The late singer-songwriter allegedly left most of her assets in her mother’s and sister’s names. As per The Star, the singer owned several luxury properties in Hong Kong, which amounted to HK$150 million. Most of the assets are under the joint tenancy of Lee and her mother, who is 86 years old.
One of the properties that belonged to Lee is under the joint tenancy of Lee’s mother and two sisters. And out of the 7 properties that she owned, there was no mortgage on any of them.
