From a bizarre meeting, to the quick decision to marry, Katy Perry and Russell Brand's relationship timeline is short.
Russell Brand and Katy Perry made global headlines in 2010 as they got married in the most lavish setting. Having met and fallen head over heels in love in 2009, the couple got married in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony at a luxury resort in a popular tiger reserve in India.
Fans of the duo were quick to point this out as a hasty decision, but the couple seemed truly in love at the time. Here’s everything you need to know about their marriage and the harsh separation the couple went through.
The relationship timeline
The relationship between Perry and Brand lasted a handful of years, from 2009 to 2011 to be precise. After being first linked in 2009, the lavish ceremony in a luxurious Indian resort commemorated the marriage between the two stars. But, despite all efforts (or not, we can’t be sure), the marriage was unfortunately short-lived. Russell Brand himself has come out and called their marriage ‘chaotic’ earlier this year.
The start of the relationship itself is a little bizarre. The former couple allegedly met backstage at the 2008 MTV VMAs ceremony. And soon, they met the following year for the VMAs, wherein Perry reportedly threw a bottle on Russell Brand’s head, and they were soon romantically linked after this incident, as per The Independent. And thus started a hasty and quick moving romantic relationship, which led to an untimely divorce.
Russell Brand’s take on the marriage
In conversation with Bear Grylls, in an episode of ‘Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge’, he said the following about his relationship with the Roar singer.
“Some aspects of it were, like, amazing. She’s an amazing person and it was kind of incredible to live for a moment in that eye of the cyclone-type aspect of fame. Aside from my feelings of affection for Katy, it’s a time that I remember being a little bit chaotic and a bit, for me, to speak for myself, but a little disconnected”

While Brand put out the fact that the marriage was chaotic, Perry had spoken about her experience with the comedian back in 2013, in a conversation with Vogue. She revealed that he ended the marriage over a text message. Yes, you read that right, this is what Katy Perry said.
“He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him. Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”
The marriage ended up in a divorce as of 2012, citing irreconcilable differences. Katy even spoke about how Brand went to the extent of making jokes about the Teenage Dream singer in one of his shows. Brand did not know that Katy was present in the audience, as she had gone to surprise him. She also spilled details on the marriage by saying the following to Vogue.
“At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness. He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting.”
Presently both of them are in seemingly happy relationships and look like they’ve moved on. Katy Perry has been engaged to actor Orlando Bloom since 2019, and have a daughter together. And Brand is currently married to author Laura Gallacher, and have three children together.
