The show is set to return to ITV for its third episode on Saturday with Jeremy Clarkson, who has been the returning host since the show's revival in 2018, and the previous episode may have included a moment that revealed a big secret of the show and the television industry in general.

The slip-up

Last week's episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire featured the contestant Maria King. Midway through the series of questions, the loud horn was played which indicates that the episode has come to an end and the session would continue on the next episode.

The Independent reports that presenter Jeremy Clarkson asked the contestant 'Do you know what that means?'

And King, seemingly by accident, responded by saying 'I’ll have to go and get changed' after which she confirmed her innocent mistake by asking 'I’m not supposed to say that, am I?'

This response highlights the fact that the show is shot back-to-back when there is a continuation, with an hour of a break in-between for the contestants to change into different clothes. Viewers are led to believe that the contestants return home and then come back to the show in the coming week, but showrunners choose to maintain that illusion by requiring a change of clothes.

The purpose for this is fairly understandable, as production costs can be maintained and editors have time to put together the episode with ample amount of time in addition to maintaining a reserve of footage.

The host's response

Clarkson burst into laughter and responded to King:

That's exactly what it means. You are absolutely right, I will be seeing you in about an hour's time, but as far as the viewer is concerned you are going home, you're going to be panicking "oh no" and then I will see you next week.

Clarkson clearly enjoyed this little slip-up and didn't mind bringing up the fact that King would be returning shortly on the show while making sarcastic remarks about how he will see her next week.

Although this is simply a behind-the-scenes tidbit for the show, it still gives the viewers an insight into how such television shows are shot. Additionally, it also highlights the idea that certain elements are engineered on television to present a narrative that may not entirely be in accordance with what is happening in actuality.

What's next for the contestant

The contestant has thus far won £4,000, and whether she will progress beyond that point is yet to be seen. The next episode of the show would've already been shot based on the revelation made by the contestant, but viewers at home will be able to see the continuation on Saturday at 9:30 pm on ITV.
