The purpose of a Royal cypher

Each Royal family member has a particular monogram that is utilized alongside official documentation and any element that's related to that specific Royal family member, which can range from buttons to certain branches of the armed forces, reports Newsweek.

The monogram is only utilized by the respective family members, and it essentially symbolizes their Royal duties and actions. Official processes dictate that the King and Queen are to pick a design provided by The College of Arms, which was founded in 1484.

The meaning behind King Charles' cypher

The King's official cypher was revealed on 26 September, which is another step that cements his monarchy. It features a monogram that includes the first letter of his name, C, and the letter R which stands for 'rex,' the Latin word for King.

The monogram is topped with the representation of the crown. With regards to King Charles' monarchy, the cypher will be implemented on government buildings, official documents and post office boxes as well, but only on the ones installed after the death of Elizabeth II, reports Today.

BBC reports that there are nearly 70,000 postboxes and 60% of them date back to the monarchy of Queen Elizabeth II. Additionally, there are boxes from the eras of Queen Victoria, Edward VII, George V and IV which have their respective cyphers, and they will be kept until the boxes need replacement.

Did Meghan Markle receive a cypher?

Following the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Kensington Palace officially released Meghan Markle's monogram which had several references to her hometown in Los Angeles, and it reflected the design of Prince Harry's monogram, reports People Magazine.

That being said, the couple officially exited the Royal family in 2020, but they were criticized for using the official cypher following their exit. At that point, they exchanged the monogram for the logo of their new foundation, Archwell, once the criticisms were being expressed.
