Gemma Atkinson reveals she 'almost died' in new tell-all interview

Gemma Atkinson’s family life

Gemma Atkinson fell in love with and got engaged to Strictly Come Dancing’s Gorka Marquez. The couple seem very much in love and went on to have two children together, in 2019 (Mia) and 2023 (Thiago). While Gemma is quite candid and vocal to her fans about her life experiences, she recently shared some disturbing details that almost took her life. And this involved the childbirth process of her older kid, Mia. Here’s why Atkinson says she almost lost her life and the reaction of her fiance as she fought back to stay alive.

Gemma’s traumatic childbirth

Back in 2019, Gemma was all geared up to have her first-ever baby with her fiance, the graceful dancer Gorka Marquez. While everything seemed to be smooth and on track with the birthing process, it was far from it. Gemma suffered a traumatic experience while giving birth to Mia. The actor suffered from post-partum hemorrhage, which proved to be a risk to her life. At some point, she had to choose between herself and the baby, which really took a toll on her. This is what she said.

The difficult question

Gemma Atkinson spoke about her first birthing process, and she went on to reveal that during the midst of it, she was asked by her medical professionals if she wanted to save herself or the baby if the situation arose. She said the following in an interview with Daily Mail’s Weekend Magazine.

"My first birth was a traumatic one. They gave me a form about blood transfusions that asked if one of us had to be saved, which one would it be? It could have gone very differently. Immediately afterward you think to yourself, 'Gosh, would I go through that again?”

“Then you look at your child and think, 'I'd do it all again tomorrow.' That's the nature of motherhood."

The aftermath that followed

Mia’s birth was far from normal, as Gemma had to be injected with hormones at the very beginning of the process. And following this, Mia’s heart rate drastically dropped, so they had to rush into an emergency C-section. The birth not only caused trauma to Gemma, but Gorka witnessed the whole thing while watching medical professionals pull out clots of blood off of his wife, while he just sat there sobbing.

And due to all the trauma, Gemma was on-edge about having another child for years, given that she could have died.

The new parents showcase their family life

Now, the happy couple are all set to drop their new TV show titled Gemma and Gorka: Behind The Lens. It covers all things pregnancy, parenting, and family life. Being a candid show, as per The Express, this is what the couple had to say about their upcoming venture.

“We've not gone full-on Kardashian, but you see life as it is during and after pregnancy.”

Gemma and Gorka are battling a lot of new feelings as parents. From a little resentment to the lack of attention that they now give each other, since the kids have become their number one priority. Their upcoming show is set to showcase all these factors that new parents experience.
