After a tumultuous 44 days in office, Liz Truss officially resigned as Prime Minister on 20 October, and less than a week later, Rishi Sunak takes up the mantle as the leader of the nation. Initially losing to Truss in the previous Conservative leadership race, Sunak vows to 'fix Liz Truss' Mistakes' during his first speech as the PM, reports BBC.
That being said, Sunak's wealth was a topic of discussion during the initial race and throughout his second and successful attempt as well. What is the new PM's property portfolio?
A luxury space in London
The Mirror reports that Sunak married the daughter of Indian billionaire Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy, Akshata Murthy in 2009. A year later in 2010, the couple bought their first home together in Kensington, London.
The four-storied luxury house has two reception rooms, five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and even a private garden area that provides some privacy from the hustle and bustle of the city. The couple initially bought the house for £4.5 million, but currently, it is estimated to be £6.6 million.
The PM also owns a property on Old Brompton Road, Chelsea. Not much is known about this location as the PM prefers to keep some parts of his life private, but according to Homes and Gardens, it is described as a 'holiday home' for relatives who visit.
A country estate
Homes and Gardens further reports that Sunak and his family own a manor in Kirby Sigston, North Yorkshire, and it is appropriately named Kirby Sigston Manor. This particular house is positioned within the PM's constituency, which is Richmond near York.
It is reported that this Georgian-style mansion sits on a 12-acre estate beside the Cod Beck river, which means that there is a sense of lively nature around the property. One of the stand-out features of the mansion is a large swimming pool. Express reports that this property cost the PM £1.5 million.
An abode abroad
Immediately after Sunak and Akshata's marriage, the couple chose to live in Santa Monica, California, where they currently own a penthouse. The breadth of options in terms of choosing their living spaces highlights the wealth owned by the couple.
The Santa Monica penthouse is owned by Sunak's wife, Akshata, as well as the Yorkshire property. Whereas, Sunak is the owner of the properties in London, reports Express.
Where is the PM planning to stay now?
Sunak was appointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer on February 13, 2020, by Boris Johnson. As the Downing Street No. 11 property is traditionally assigned to the Chancellor, Sunak and his wife moved to the property that same year.
However, his exit as the Chancellor on 5 July, 2022, as a means of critiquing the government set forth a wave that eventually lead to the resignation of Boris Johnson, and three months before that, Sunak exited Downing Street No. 11 alongside his wife and moved back to the Kensington property to be closer to their children's school, reports The Telegraph.
Now, there are questions on whether the new PM would be choosing to stay in Downing Street No. 10 or not. The Telegraph further reports that he could be one of the first PM's to opt out of staying at the official residence of the PM. The couple have already chosen their Kensington property as a convenient spot for their children.
There are two possible outcomes, either the PM would choose to divide his time between the Kensington property and No. 10, or he could possibly be urged to move to No. 10 by the Metropolitan Police as a security measure. As of now, no specific details have been revealed in terms of the PM's official stay.
